Errol has incredibly diverse talent on the slopes; he’s competitive at an almost unheard-of discipline range including Giant Slalom, Downhill, Slalom, Super-G, Combined, and Skiercross. Not only does Errol have the athleticism to race in such a wide variety of disciplines, his talent is such that he has a real shot of medaling in skiercross. He is one to watch on the road to Vancouver.
Born of a Jamaican father and American mother, Errol was groomed for competition on the Squaw Valley race program. Since his childhood, his love of the Caribbean island spawned dreams of representing Jamaica in international competition. As his’s alpine race skills grew, he realized the sport may be the avenue to fulfill his dreams. An invitation from the US Ski and Snowboard Association helped make his decision and chart his Jamaican journey.
In the winter of 2007-2008, he was the youngest of four athletes invited on the first U.S. Skiercross Team that includes ex-World Cup skiers like Casey Pucket, Jake Fiala and Spyder-sponsored Daron Rahlves. After considering the US call, he ultimately declined, opting instead to place his focus on Jamaica, and set out to make reality happen. Errol, his coach Raul Guisado, ski technician Eric Holmer, operations director Pat Andrews and mother Catherine Kerr constructed the team under the direction of the Jamaican Ski Federation. The US Skiercross invitation upped the ante of his competitiveness, and instead of solely focusing on alpine events, Errol decided to throw skiercross into his repetoire. Now, not only had he made the decision to carry the weight of a national team, he increased his competitive breadth beyond most athlete’s simple consideration. Errol's ready to rock the nation.
Biggest influence Music
When I am not skiing I am riding BMX, motocross, and riding my Vespa
Standing in the start house of the Hannenkam downhill, I am thinking I’d rather be on a beach in Jamaica.
Favorite Jamaican food Jerk chicken with rice and peas
If I were not a ski racer I would be A race car driver or a rock star
If I could travel anywhere in the world right now I would go to the top of Mt Everest
What gives you a bigger rush: X or alpine racing? They are 2 totally different rushes. If I had to pick one, I would say that running a tough downhill is a bigger rush
What’s heavily played in your iPod right now? Little Wayne, 303, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and a little bit of Bach
Fastest I have skied is 80 or 90 mph
Starting a national team is a huge undertaking. How does one start the process of creating the Jamaican National Ski Team? The Jamaica Ski Federation has been around since 1999. They have been recognized by FIS since then. So now we are just taking it one step further, and we are putting together a serious team that is going to go take on the world. From one small little island like Jamaica, you can see special, powerful, and determinated people such as in Usain Bolt and countless others that have come from a very small island with limited resources and made their mark on the world stage. We are now starting our journey to make our mark in skiing.
What are your personal goals for this season? To send a message that we set out on this noble quest and journey, and we are going to go prove to the world that we can not only be here but win and hopefully be a dominating force in our sport
For the Olympics? Being a skier since I was a little child, you always dream of winning an Olympic gold medal. So, that is the goal. It is going to be a rough and bumpy road on the way there, but I believe that it is trials and tribulations that make you tougher and stronger as a competitor, and I just want to take a pair of skis and show the world how far your dreams can take you
